BugQuest: A National Search to Uncover Biodiversity

BugQuest: A National Search to Uncover Biodiversity

BugQuest is a free national biodiversity engagement program run through the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics at the University of Guelph. The project connects insect sampling and DNA barcoding with schools and community sites across Canada, helping participants explore the insect biodiversity in their own area while contributing to a larger research effort.

Host sites receive a trap kit and instructional materials, and participation mainly involves setting up the trap and changing the collection bottle once a week during the sampling season. Samples are then returned to the research team for processing and DNA barcoding. There is no cost to participate.

While BugQuest often works with schools, community-based sites are also an important part of the program. Childcare and early learning settings can be a good fit, especially where there is strong outdoor access and an interest in connecting children and families with nature in a hands-on way.

They are especially interested in sites where the project can support outdoor education, curiosity, and public engagement around local biodiversity.
