New Resource: Decolonization & JEDI Resource Guide for Outdoor Early Learning and Play

Decolonization & JEDI Resource Guide for Outdoor Early Learning and Play

The Canadian Centre for Outdoor Play (CCOP) is pleased to announce the launch of the Decolonization, Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) in Outdoor Early Learning and Play Resource Guide. Developed as a companion resource to Outdoor Play Canada’s Educators Teaching Educators: Canada’s Outdoor Early Childhood Education Continuous Professional Learning Framework, this new guide supports educators in creating more equitable, inclusive, culturally responsive, and decolonized outdoor learning environments.

The guide emerged from extensive consultation with early childhood education professionals across Canada, who highlighted the importance of centring decolonization and JEDI principles within outdoor early learning and play. While these concepts were integrated throughout the Outdoor ECE Framework, educators expressed a desire for additional resources to support deeper reflection, learning, and practice. The Decolonization & JEDI Resource Guide was created to meet that need.

Designed as a living resource, the guide brings together a wide range of practical and theoretical materials from Outdoor Play Canada and other organizations. Resources are carefully organized by topic and format, making it easier for educators to find information that aligns with their interests, professional learning goals, and local contexts.

The guide is intended to help educators:

  • Explore key concepts related to decolonization and JEDI in outdoor learning and play.
  • Reflect on personal practices, assumptions, and experiences.
  • Expand their knowledge through diverse resources and perspectives.
  • Identify opportunities to apply equitable and inclusive approaches within their own outdoor programs and settings.

Ultimately, the resource aims to support early learning professionals and organizations as they continue to foster outdoor environments where every child, family, and educator experiences a sense of belonging and inclusion.

We invite educators, organizations, researchers, and community partners to explore the guide and join us in advancing more inclusive and equitable outdoor learning and play experiences for all.
